Invitation to SICE

President of SICE: Hirozumi Sone

The Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, abbreviated as SICE, was established in 1961. It has been a leading academic society for transdisciplinary science and technology, covering the fields of measurement, control, systems and information, system integration, and related industrial applications. Therefore, the focus is essentially different from traditional disciplines such as electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering.

SICE offers opportunities for members to not only research academic problems but also discuss solutions for industrial problems in steel manufacture, chemical processes, automobile manufacture, and so on. It also offers opportunities for resolving problems in various fields, such as transportation, communication, the environment, buildings, construction, medical treatment, welfare and finance, from the viewpoint of measurement, control, systems and information.

We will commemorate the 50th anniversary in 2011. The year should be the start of a new SICE for leading advanced science and technology aimed at providing original concepts and powerful methodologies for solving a variety of social problems, such as the environment, energy and security. To this end, we set a slogan called "SICE Anytime Everywhere," which means that any scientific and/or technological problem to be solved always requires the advanced technology of SICE fields. We believe that SICE has been one of the major players in advanced science and manufacturing technology in Japan, and is one of the leading societies of its kind in the world.

1) SICE Technical Activities: To develop in diverse fields as indicated above, SICE is composed of five technical divisions that cover the areas of measurement, control, systems and information, system integration, and industrial applications. Eight regional chapters that play an important role for local communities in Japan are also organized.

2) SICE Journal and Transactions: The SICE Journal covers all the fields of the aforementioned science, technology and industrial applications, and publishes useful articles for future directions in a variety of areas. The quality of SICE Transactions is known to be quite high in the field. In addition, the new SICE English Transactions, "SICE Journal of Control, Measurement, and System Integration (JCMSI)," was established in January of 2008 and is getting wide attention. We really encourage you to submit your papers to JCMSI.

3) SICE International Activities: SICE is open to the world. The official language of the SICE Annual Conference is English since 2002, for leading global academic activities. The conference attracts many participants from all over the world. In 2006 we held the first overseas annual conference in Busan, Korea as a joint conference with ICASE (Institute of Control, Automation and Systems Engineers). We had another joint conference, "ICCAS-SICE 2009", with ICROS (Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems) last year in Fukuoka, Japan, for which more than 1200 papers were submitted by over 400 international members from 30 countries. We are planning to hold the second overseas annual conference this year in Taipei in collaboration with CACS (Chinese Automatic Control Society in Taiwan). In addition to the annual conferences, SICE is active in organizing international conferences and symposia in cooperation with such international organizations as IEEE, IFAC, IMEKO, CIS, ICROS and ISA.

Sciences and technologies of measurement, control, systems and information will become indispensably important to sustain human life on the earth through providing "green innovation" and "life innovation". In order to activate and develop these fields, SICE would like to collaborate with a large number of researchers and engineers working in this field. I am certain that SICE can meet your expectations, and I am looking forward to you joining SICE.
